The Servant’s Journey: Part II
2003 : Week 9

This is the second part of the message J. D. started last week. It’s a beautiful reminder of God’s ability to provide.
Genesis 24 as revealed by the Holy Spirit to J. D. Bridges…
Are you still on your journey faithful employee? Much time has passed since your journey began. Doesn’t it seem like ages since you last glanced at your instructions?
“I know where I’m going,” you say to yourself. “I’m still on course.”
But the road is less traveled here. As the sun drifts below the horizon, the shadows grow longer, and the clear view of the path before you diminishes with each twist and turn. Suddenly the road forks! You must make the decision to go left or right. Doubt sets in, and you begin to realize you don’t know the way like you once thought. If only you could remember where you placed the instructions…
Remember Abraham’s servant? He left with Abraham’s detailed instructions to find a wife for Isaac. Before leaving, Abraham had reassured him by answering all of his questions and concerns. Could the instructions be any more clear and concise?
- Find a wife for Isaac from Abraham’s native land.
- Make sure she is a descendant of Abraham.
- Do not take Isaac back there.
Put yourself in the shoes—or sandals—of the servant. You’ve just completed a long trek believing success could not be far away. And then it hits you…how many women met Abraham’s qualifications: maybe 10, 20, or even 50? How was he to know the right woman for Isaac? The directions seemed clear at the beginning of the journey, but as he approached his final destination, he realized more information was needed. Now, many miles from home, he called to the only one who could answer.
The end of a long, hard journey was marked by the most important action of the trip. The servant’s prayer, in verse 14, was specific and unselfish. It was specific, so there could be no doubt, the woman to correctly answer the servant’s question, had been provided by God. Before he was able to finish his prayer, “Rebekah came out…”
Has your life’s journey been nothing but smooth, or has the road been a little bumpy at times? Where did you turn? Did you turn around or did you turn your situation over to God?
At times, you will need reassurance because the journey may be a long one. God will comfort. At times, you will need the proper tools because the journey may be a tough one. God will provide. At times, you will need to pray for the answer because the journey may be a confusing one. God will answer. In order to glorify God in the highest, we must lift our lives to Him when our journeys are at their lowest.
May God bless your journey each step of the way.
8Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.

Genesis 24:12-19
12 Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.
14 May it be that when I say to a girl, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too'-let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."
15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor.
16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, "Please give me a little water from your jar."
18 "Drink, my lord," she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
19 After she had given him a drink, she said, "I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking."
