The Servant’s Journey: Part I
2003 : Week 8

Our friend J. D. Bridges has submitted today’s devotion. This is Part I of an II part series on this story. Part II will be out next week. We hope it helps you on your journey through life.

Genesis 24:3-10 as revealed by the Holy Spirit to J. D. Bridges…

Imagine you work for a wealthy and powerful man, feared by many. Yet, he treats all of his employees with the highest regard. As you begin your daily duties, you notice a note on the message board addressed to you that reads, “Come see me. Urgent! —The Boss”. Your meeting with him is short, but intense. He wants you—his most trusted, senior employee—to perform a special task, which will undoubtedly lead you into a dangerous, foreign land. The directions are clear and concise, and every resource he has is at your disposal. Still, there is some hesitation and doubt on your part, which is made clearly evident by the questions you ask. Your first thought: “Not my responsibility.” Yet, somehow, he senses your concern and his words offer a sense of peace and comfort that wasn’t there earlier. You vow to give your all and your journey begins….

In the Old Testament, Abraham’s son, Isaac, had not yet married and Abraham was growing quite old. As a concerned father, he asked his chief servant to find a wife for his son. It is not surprising that Abraham’s choice for Isaac was special; after all, Isaac was his beloved son. Abraham sent his servant with specific instructions, in search of Isaac’s new bride.

What an amazing depiction of the Master-Servant relationship! The master gives the instructions and the servant carries out the orders. The master provides the tools and the servant works with all that has been provided. The servant asks questions and the master answers them with certainty and patience. The end result is a unique balance of trust, faithfulness, and obedience.

As Christians, we serve a loving, faithful, merciful and all-powerful God. The relationship is not negotiable: He is the Master and we are the servants. He provides us with all the necessary tools we will ever need in our lives’ journeys so long as the journey is for Him. Along the way, He walks with us, comforts us, and sometimes carries us, as any loving father would do for his child. But, make no mistake; at the end of the day He is still the Master and we are still the servants.

Reflect upon your life. Remember the journeys you’ve made and look to the journeys you’re about to make. Undoubtedly, trials and tribulations lie ahead. Are you discouraged? Don’t be! If your heart is in the right place, then your labor and suffering will not go unnoticed (Romans 8:18). Just as you are working for Him, please remember He is working diligently for you as well.
2 …I am going there to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.    John 14:2-3 (NIV)
May the words of Jesus offer you comfort on your journey.

Genesis 24:3-10

3 I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,
4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”
5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?”
6 “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,” Abraham said.
7 The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me an oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.
8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and left, taking with him all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor.
