Contemplations from my car
2003 : Week 12

Our site posts writings submitted by any Christian who has a godly message. For a full explanation of why this is important, we encourage you to read “The Woman at the Well,” found in our Archives section.

Today, we introduce, Eric Sunkel. Eric is from Bloomington, Illinois and was saved at a very young age. He attends Vale Baptist Church and says he’s proof that God never gives up on an individual. Eric loves writing and playing music; he plays guitar, drums and sings. Eric has written most of his life. He says it’s a way for him to try to figure out himself, the world and God. This is a beautiful poem that I’m sure will bless our readers.

The Preface
The title of this poem may seem silly, but I often have conversations like this with God: just thinking about His greatness. If I could relate anything in my writings regarding God, the most important thing would be the accessibility of God anywhere you are. I wrote this in my car at lunchtime. I hope you can sense, even a little, the expansiveness of Father God, from what I have written.

The Poem
Holy is an attribute reserved only for you.
If I could explore the space of my imagination, as finite as it is.
I could not fathom the depths of your boundless attributes.

I look at the picture you gave me in your word.
Angels on high, day & night singing Your praise.
What kind of God is this? Unbound by my inner space (mind)?
Who is this King of Glory?
He is the Lord God Almighty!

Who can fathom the depth of your understanding?
Certainly I am not that man. I am not even the smartest of them all.
But somehow I can understand Your love nailed to a cross.
I am amazed that even with the chasm between us
You found a way to get close to me.
You have bridged the gap between God and man.

Your eye is on the falling sparrow or a star as it explodes.
You are there when every human baby is delivered.
You are there when every animal is born.
What kind of God is this?
Who can take in every detail yet never
slumbers or sleeps?

Your eyes see every snowflake that lazily drifts from the clouds
With Your hands you formed every mountain
With those same hands You formed me from the ground.
I was conceived in the fire of your Holy Spirit
Oh, my soul breathe deep the fire of God!

Your eyes see every tear before it falls from my eyes.
How much you must care for me. I cannot comprehend. But I try to.
Sometimes I think that if I did not try to figure things out I might just forget about you?
This is my way of showing you I care. I fill my mind with thoughts of You.
I am human. I am moved by my feelings.
You are God and are not moved. My thoughts race out of my control.
Your thoughts are as the sands of the ocean yet You stay in control.

Father, I can just picture You and me walking side by side.
I Imagine God and man walking together once again.
This very thought trips my mind up but I will think it.
I will dream it. Knowing I can attain it, even here on earth.
You Lord, are clothed in your robe of majesty and me in my shawl of flesh.

You are too great to comprehend but I will spend my lifetime getting to know You.
Can you picture this, God and man as friends, not equal,
not even half of equal but definitely friends.

Psalm 24:7-10

7 Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!
8 Who is the King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O gates, And lift them up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.
