The Eyes of the Lord
2005 : February | Website
Version
It can be difficult to remain focused on the Lord, at times. We face so much turmoil in our lives that the tendency can be for us to forget the source of our strength, protection and deliverance. We have all suffered through physical, emotional or spiritual pain. Sometimes, our pain comes from watching others suffer. There are no easy answers, when someone you love is perishing. Looking at them, we wonder where the Lord has gone. We cry out, alone or with our brothers and sisters in Christ, but it seems like the Lord doesn’t hear our prayers or see our pain. “Where have you gone in such times of anguish Lord? Where?”
Today’s verse is a reminder and a promise from the Lord that He is still with us. He has not left us when things seem desperate and hopeless. Contrary, He is there to support those He loves. As we see in this passage from 2 Chronicles 16:9 (NASB), the Lord never takes His eyes off of us,
This description shows the Lord actively looking to help us; His eyes are ‘scanning the earth’. The description does not suggest our Lord is asleep or has turned away from us, so that we would have to scream loudly to get His attention; this is not the case. Contrary, the Lord is actively pursuing and helping us in a strong manner.
9 "For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.”
2 Chronicles 16:9 (NASB)
In our souls, we know this to be true. There are so many times in the bible when we read of the Lord intervening to help. There are so many times in the bible when we see the Lord standing with the ones He loves. He is always by their side, and He never departs from them. We have a marvelous example of this in 1 Chronicles 18:13 (NASB) where it says that,
What a wonderful passage of hope this verse is. It encourages us to know and understand that the Lord helped David regardless of where He was. When he fought Goliath, the Lord was there. When he fled King Saul, the Lord was there. Regardless of how horrible his circumstances were, the Lord did not depart from David. Instead, the Lord was actively guiding David through the trials and the tribulations he faced.
13 “…the Lord helped David wherever He went.”
1 Chronicles 18:13 (NASB)
We cry to the same God that David cried to, and the Lord promises that He will be active in our times of need. The Lord will not be passive when we cry to Him. His watchful eyes have seen your pain, and He will bear it with you. In some cases, the Lord will stop our suffering and grant us the miracle we prayed for. In other cases, as we see in Job, He will allow us to go through the trials. Either way, the Lord will not depart from us, and He will not turn His face from those He loves. When we give our hearts to The Lord, He will give us the peace we need through our tribulations.
Sometimes, in the most difficult of the times, we might fail to see the hand of God in our lives. We can still take peace and be heartened; for while we may fail to see the Lord in our lives, He never fails to see us and our lives. Regardless of where we are and what our circumstances, the Lord is always searching the earth to give His love to those in need.
May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you today and always…
