Jesus - Part 8, The Healer is Divine
2004 : Week 5 | Printer Friendly Version
Last week, this story showed us that we should be a thankful people; God is worthy of praise. Today we’ll look closer to see why this story reveals the Divine nature of Jesus Christ.
That God would become human is difficult for our finite minds to understand, but the Old Testament prophesized that this would happen. One such example can be found in the Book of Isaiah, the Jewish Prophet, who lived and wrote about 700 years before the birth of Jesus:
14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. - Isaiah 7:14 (NASB)
Immanuel means “God with us’, so the Old Testament leaves us with the expectation that God would come in the flesh. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy; He is ‘God with us.’
To make sense of this, we must understand that the God of the Bible is three equal and eternal Beings unified in what theologians call the Godhead:
- God the Father
- God the Son, Jesus
- God the Holy Spirit.
Perhaps an illustration will help. Think of a three-lane highway; it will have a left, center and right lane. All three lanes are distinct, yet all three are also one highway. So to, God is three Persons, but there is only one God. This is called the doctrine of the Trinity. Of course, our illustration using the highway is an inadequate comparison, but hopefully it provides a glimpse of the Trinity.
Jesus reveals extraordinary powers in healing the 10 lepers; these powers show He was more then just a man. He didn’t touch the men. He didn’t give them medicine. He didn’t have anyone pray for them. In fact, when you read the story, you’ll notice that Jesus never even said, “Be healed.” Simply put, it was done. One minute they were lepers; the next minute they were cleansed.
The testimony of the man who returns after being healed gives us another glimpse of who Jesus is. The healed leper understands who is in front of Him. He understands who had just paid him a visit. He understands that He is before God, and that’s why he is, ‘glorifying God with a loud voice, and falling on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him.’ This man understands what everyone understands when Jesus comes into their lives; Jesus is God.
Jesus’ reaction to the man worshipping Him is very important, since He doesn’t make the man stop praising Him. If Jesus were simply a prophet, He would have demanded the man stop praising Him and warned him of the dangers of idol worship. This doesn’t happen, instead, Jesus accepts the praise. Further, He asks why the others who were cleansed did not come back, “But the nine-where are they? “Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?”
Many men have claimed to be God, but they never raised the dead, and none of them ever has or ever will rise from the dead; Jesus did. Christ’s tomb lies empty. He walked this earth and performed miracles that we still talk about 2000 years later. The evidence is there for you to review: a life like no other, a death like no other, a resurrection like no other and a Man who loved like no other. His name is Jesus Christ, and the leper who returned knew exactly who He was; do you?
May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you today and always…

Luke 17: 12-19
12 As He entered a village, ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him;
13 And they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
14 When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed.
15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice,
16 And he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine-where are they?
18 “Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?”
19 And He said to him, "Stand up and go; your faith has made you well."
